Fairwork Report, a global project, has called for improved working conditions and safety for platform workers including Uber, Bolt, Glovo among others in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Fairwork Nigeria Team, on Monday, in Lagos.
The team members include the Principal Investigator, Prof Yinka David-West; Co-Principal Investigator, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi; Researcher, Dr Daniel Arubayi; Research Assistants, Ms Chinyere Emeshie, and Ms Amaka Anozie.
“In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a rapid growth of the platform economy and its associated employment opportunities for thousands of its citizens.
“However, existing labour laws do not adequately protect these workers, who work mainly with ride-hailing and delivery platforms, “ the statement said.
It said that Fairwork was set to launch its first report on the working conditions of platform workers in Nigeria on March 31, 2023.
The report, according to the statement, will identify if there had been any changes in the situation of such workers beyond just ride-hailing platforms.
“The report intends to continue the national conversation on improving working conditions for all platform workers while harnessing the potential of these platforms to create decent jobs.
“The Fairwork Nigeria 2022/23 report evaluates the working conditions of eight digital labour platforms against five global principles of Fairwork.
“The principles include fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation, “ the statement said.
According to the statement, Fairwork Nigeria is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (GIZ).
It stated also, that Fairwork is a global project based at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford and the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre.
“Made up of a global network of researchers, Fairwork evaluates digital platforms’ working conditions and ranks them based on five principles of Fairwork.
“Globally, Fairwork collaborates closely with workers, platforms, advocates, and policymakers to envision and build a fairer future of work, “ it stated.
