Claim: Several Facebook Users, Abuchi Okaro,  Jaypee, Alloy Ogwuche amongst others posted a video on Thursday saying Peter Obi was in Niger state University in Niger state and was greeted by a large crowd and jubilation.

Verdict: False. Peter Obi was not in Niger state University, rather, he was at the University of the Niger in Ununya, Anambra state in May 2026. The video was taken in the university during his visit.

Full Text

Facebook on Thursday, 30th July was filled with posts made about Peter Obi visiting Niger state university in Niger state. The videos which were the same video used by all posters was a 17 seconds video showing Peter Obi wearing a yellow ankara shirt and brown trousers with the crowd taking pictures and hailing him.

A Facebook User, Abuchi Okaro posted a reel and wrote, “Jubilation filled Niger state as Peter Obi visited Niger state university, receiving a rousing welcome from an enthusiastic crowd. Niger state, your support matters. Come 2027, let your votes speak. Support Peter Obi . Support NDC . Together, let’s build a better Nigeria.”

The reel had 367 likes, 56 comments and 26 shares.

Another Facebook User, Jaypee captioned the video “Peter Obi at Niger state University. The People’s President.” The post had 60 likes, 5 comments and 25 shares.

Other facebook users posted the same videos like here, here, here and here

Verification

In Niger state, there is no Niger state university. The universities in the state include the Federal University of Technology, Minna, the Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna (AKUM), the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangoda University, Lapai.

Private Universities include Newgate University, Minna and Edusoko University, Bida.

The video being played was the video of Peter Obi’s visit to the University of the Niger which is located in Ununya in Anambra state on 7th May, where he donated ₦25 million for education development.

On his X account, Peter Obi posted the pictures and information about his visit and donation to the school.

In the pictures, he was seen wearing the same outfit shown in the video being circulated on the social media and also, a green and cream colored building was also shown in the video which was seen in some of the pictures posted by Peter Obi on his X account.

The University of the Niger, commonly known as ‘UniNiger’ is a private tertiary institution located in Anambra State, Nigeria. Because of the Niger in the name, it is easily mistaken for Niger state.

The University of the Niger is owned by the Anglican Diocese on the Niger (Anglican Communion). It was founded by Bishop Owen Chidozie Nwokolo and has its permanent site is situated at Umunya, along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Provost of the Niger state College of Education, Minna which is located inside the Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, Dr. Muhammed Baba said that there was no visitor like Peter Obi or any other politician in the institution this week.

He said that there was no way Peter Obi would have visited the institution that they won’t be aware.

Conclusion

This is the case of mistaken and misinterpreted location. The visit of Peter Obi took place at the University of the Niger which is located in Anambra and not in Niger state.

Therefore, the video circulating is misleading because though the video is real but the location and the context it was presented is false.
