The State Multi-stakeholders Implementation and Monitoring Committee (SMIMC) on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, is reviewing the Benue Action Plan to strengthen women’s participation in peace, security, and governance.
Mr. Joseph Gbagyo, SMIMC Chairman, said the current State Action Plan (SAP) had expired, prompting the review to reactivate it and ensure inclusivity of women in peacebuilding, politics, and governance.
Gbagyo, a legal practitioner, noted at the review and revalidation meeting in Makurdi that the structures were established by the CLEEN Foundation to implement WPS in line with UN Resolution 1325.
He explained that the review would address women’s participation, violent and harmful practices against women, and protection for women affected by conflict.
“The Benue Action Plan on WPS was launched in 2021 with support from International Alert and the Norwegian Embassy to provide a roadmap for addressing women, peace, and security. However, the plan was not fully implemented and has since expired,” he said.
Gbagyo added that the review incorporates new issues such as digital violence, conflict from mining activities, and protection of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Commitment was secured from various partners, including the Benue Budget/Planning Commission, Benue Peace and Reconciliation Committee, and the Ministry of Women Affairs, to support the improved and revalidated document.
He praised the CLEEN Foundation and the Director General of the Benue Budget/Planning Commission for supporting the review and ensuring budgetary considerations are addressed.
Mrs. Magdalene Igbazua, CLEEN Foundation Benue Coordinator, said the review aimed to identify gaps and update the SAP to reflect changes since 2021, including the impact of Covid-19 and evolving local contexts.
“The review will guide broader women’s involvement in peace, security, and decision-making,” she said.
The Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Theresa Ikwue, represented by Mr. Austin Ugbir, reaffirmed the ministry’s support for collaboration to enhance the wellbeing of women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Attendees included security agencies, civil society organizations, and relevant government ministries.
