Three persons were killed while one sustained injuries when a mining pit collapsed at Bazakwoi, a village in the Adnun community of Niger State.
The incident was confirmed by the Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah.
“The agency received report of a mining pit collapse at Bazakwoi of Adnun community.
“The incident occurred on Thursday. It involved local miners who were said to be carrying out mining activities illegally.
“Three persons were confirmed dead while one person was rescued alive with injuries.”
He added, however, that no one was trapped in the pit.
The incident is coming barely one week after a mining pit collapsed in the Galkogo community, killing one person and trapping 14 persons who are still in the pit.
ASHENEWS recalls that a mining site had collapsed in the Galkogo village of Shiroro local government area of Niger state, killing one person and trapping more than 30 persons in early June.
“One person had been confirmed dead, six persons rescued with severe injuries while more than 30 people were still being trapped,” SEMA had said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, on Saturday in Abuja, has threatened owners of licensed units of land mined by illegal miners that they will lose their titles.
