YEFFA – Across Africa, the energy and optimism of young people are a powerful force. They are brimming with ideas and eager to contribute, yet a significant hurdle stands in their way – a lack of opportunities in the dominant economic sector: agriculture. A staggering 60% of African youth, according to the World Bank, are unemployed. This not only stifles their personal growth but also hinders the continent’s agricultural potential.

However, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope emerges: The Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Agriculture (YEFFA) program. This powerful initiative, born from a collaboration between AGRA and the Mastercard Foundation, signifies a monumental USD 350 million commitment to nurture a brighter future for Africa’s youth.

To this end, YEFFA’s approach is holistic and multifaceted.  It goes beyond simply creating jobs; it seeks to empower young Africans to become successful agri-entrepreneurs. The program tackles key hurdles by providing comprehensive support in areas like market linkages, financing, knowledge building, and policy advocacy. This approach ensures young people have the tools and resources they need to thrive.

One critical aspect of YEFFA is its focus on strengthening the policy and institutional landscape. Recognizing the importance of a supportive environment, the program endeavors to bolster regional and continental policies to create an enabling ecosystem for youth participation in agribusiness. Moreover, it emphasizes gender and youth-specific indicators to ensure equitable opportunities for all.

Another cornerstone of YEFFA is its commitment to promoting climate-smart agricultural practices. By imparting knowledge and resources, the program aims to empower young farmers to navigate the challenges posed by climate change, ensuring the long-term viability of their businesses and contributing to a sustainable agricultural future for Africa.

Furthermore, YEFFA aims to facilitate market linkages for young entrepreneurs, particularly focusing on connecting young women-led agribusinesses in the processing sector to lucrative markets. By ensuring a smooth transition from farm to market, the program enhances their economic prospects.

Nevertheless, a significant obstacle for young people remains the difficulty in obtaining financing. YEFFA addresses this challenge head-on by facilitating access to affordable financial products and services, empowering young individuals to invest in their agricultural endeavors and overcome this critical hurdle.

Moreover, YEFFA recognizes that knowledge is power. Therefore, the program is set to provide young people with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in agriculture, including training in business management, financial literacy, and market engagement strategies.

An often-overlooked aspect is the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes. The program pledges to improve youth coordination and policy advocacy, ensuring their voices are heard and reflected in policies that shape their futures.

The upcoming launch of YEFFA in Malawi then exemplifies the program’s potential. Malawi’s vast agricultural potential remains largely untapped due to the challenges faced by its young population. YEFFA’s tailored approach in Malawi will address these specific issues, empowering young Malawians to become the driving force behind a more vibrant agricultural sector.

The impact of this program extends far beyond the individual. By investing in young people, the program can achieve significant social and economic benefits for Africa. It can alleviate poverty, stimulate economic growth, and enhance food security, paving the way for a transformed Africa.

YEFFA is more than just a program; it’s a vision for a better tomorrow. By unlocking the potential of young people, YEFFA can cultivate a future where agriculture thrives, poverty diminishes, and food security is assured. This initiative represents a powerful investment in Africa’s future, with the potential to reap rewards for generation to come. Let us support YEFFA and empower Africa’s youth to cultivate a brighter future for themselves and the continent.
