The Bite of Hunger: A Nigerian Story, By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

The sun beats down on the cracked asphalt, a relentless heat mirroring the gnawing emptiness in my stomach. My worn sandals slap against the uneven ground as I walk, each step a testament to the hunger that has become a constant companion. It’s the price of survival in Kaduna, a land where the cost of living has spiralled upwards, leaving many, like myself, struggling to make ends meet.

It wasn’t always like this. I remember a time when the aroma of fresh bread baking in the morning air was a comforting routine, not a distant luxury. When a plate of rice and stew wasn’t a cause for celebration, but a simple, everyday meal.  Now, the rising prices have turned even the most necessities into a source of constant anxiety. Every trip to the market is a battle against the relentless tide of inflation, each item a painful reminder of the dwindling resources at my disposal.

The impact of the rising cost of living is felt in every facet of life. The familiar hustle and bustle of Kaduna, the beating heart of the north, is now a soundtrack of desperation. Street vendors, once brimming with hope, now wear expressions of worry, their goods barely finding buyers. The chatter of children playing in the streets is replaced with the silence of empty stomachs, a stark reflection of the struggle for basic sustenance.

One day, as I walk through the bustling market, I see a young woman, her face etched with worry, haggling over the price of a single plantain. She is struggling, her clothes faded and worn, her demeanour weary. We exchange a fleeting glance, a silent understanding passing between us – the unspoken language of shared hardship. It is in that moment I realize that my struggle is not unique, it is a collective experience, a shared burden carried by countless people in Kaduna.

The biting hunger is not just a physical sensation; it is an emotional weight that pulls me down, robbing me of my optimism and energy. It makes it difficult to focus, to dream, to envision a future where I won’t have to constantly worry about the next meal. The gnawing hunger, coupled with the rising cost of living, creates a vicious cycle of despair.

But even amid this struggle, there are flickers of hope. I witness the resilience of my fellow Kaduna residents, and their determination to survive against all odds. I see the community spirit that blossoms in the face of adversity, neighbors sharing what little they have, and offering a helping hand to those in need. I see the unwavering strength of families, pulling together, sacrificing for each other, their love a shield against the storm of economic hardship.

There are moments of triumph, too.  A day when I manage to secure a small, temporary job, allowing me to buy a few extra items at the market, a glimmer of relief amidst the struggle.  The joyous laughter of children is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the spirit of hope can still flicker. These moments, however small, are a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Kaduna people, a beacon of light in the face of adversity.

As I walk home that evening, the setting sun casting long shadows, I realize that the biting hunger is not just about the lack of food. It is about the loss of dignity, the constant struggle for survival, the erosion of hope. It is a reminder of the inequalities that permeate society, the disparity between those who have and those who have nothing.

But the hunger also catalyzes change. It ignites a fire in our hearts, a collective demand for a better future, a future where food security isn’t a luxury but a right, a future where the cost of living won’t erode the dreams and aspirations of generations to come.  The biting hunger, though a painful experience, has the power to unite us, to force us to confront the challenges we face and to demand a more just and equitable society.

This narrative, my story, is not unique. It is shared by countless people in Kaduna, a testament to the resilience and the strength of the human spirit. We are not defined by the hunger we endure, but by the hope we hold onto, the fight we continue to wage against the odds, and the unwavering belief that a brighter future is possible. It is in the collective effort, in the shared struggle and resilience, that we find the strength to overcome the biting hunger and build a Kaduna where the promise of a better life is not just a dream, but a reality.
