Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the less privileged as he flagged off the annual distribution of foodstuffs, textile materials, and cash assistance to orphans and the needy across the 87 districts of the state.

The initiative, organized through the State Zakat and Endowment Board, aims to support 9,200 beneficiaries ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, ensuring they partake in the festivities with dignity.

Each of the 87 districts is set to receive:

  • 50 bags of 50kg millet
  • 50 bags of 25kg rice
  • The State Zakat Office will also distribute 500 bags of rice and millet

Additionally, each orphan will receive a ₦5,000 cash grant. To further provide relief, 4,600 female orphans will be given wrappers, while 4,600 male orphans will receive bundles of Shadda along with an extra ₦5,000 for sewing.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Aliyu urged affluent individuals in the state to support the welfare of orphans and vulnerable groups, emphasizing the religious and moral obligations outlined in the Qur’an and Hadith.

“Providing for orphans does not only benefit them but also strengthens our society by giving them a sense of belonging and responsibility,” he stated, warning that neglecting these children could lead to societal decay and an increase in social vices.

The governor reiterated his administration’s unwavering dedication to social welfare, pledging continuous efforts to tackle idleness, indolence, and youth restiveness.

Governor Aliyu assured residents that the state government would sustain such interventions to uplift vulnerable groups, particularly during festive periods.

Concluding his speech, he formally launched the 2015 distribution exercise, encouraging all stakeholders to actively contribute to improving the lives of the needy.

“We must all rise to the challenge and do the needful to save our society from further decline,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by government officials, traditional leaders, religious scholars, and community representatives, reaffirming a collective commitment to social welfare in Sokoto State.
