In a major move to promote agribusiness and strengthen food security in Kaduna, the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), in collaboration with Small Homes, hosted a two-day Agricultural Fair that brought together stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.

By Sani Modibbo, Kaduna

Held at the KSMC premises in Kaduna, the event attracted farmers, agro-processors, government officials, researchers, and entrepreneurs from across the state and beyond. It marked the first time such a fair was held in the state, providing a platform for participants to showcase innovations and local products and form strategic partnerships.

The fair featured exhibitions of farming tools, agro-processing equipment, eco-friendly technologies, and a wide variety of agricultural produce. Attendees also participated in interactive workshops, expert panel discussions, and live demonstrations on sustainable agricultural practices.

Fostering Innovation and Economic Growth

Declaring the fair open, KSMC Managing Director Ahmed Maiyaki emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between farmers and markets while encouraging youth participation in agriculture.

“We are proud to partner with Small Homes to create a platform that promotes innovation, knowledge exchange, and economic growth in the agricultural sector,” he said.

Small Homes Managing Director, Hajara Yusuf Dantsoho, highlighted the need to elevate the visibility of smallholder farmers through strategic media engagement.

“Consistent support for smallholder farmers is essential for long-term rural development and food sustainability,” she said.

Key exhibitors and their offerings

Prominent participants at the fair included Zaifi Farms Limited, Debmark Allied Farms, the Bank of Industry, the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alzira’A Tech, and Rucky Sab Collections.

Bank of Agriculture (BOA): The institution opened new accounts and introduced loan opportunities to interested farmers. A representative said the fair was a “major networking opportunity” for the bank.

Alzira’A Tech: Known for its organic fertilizers and eco-friendly solutions, the company offered consultancy services and connected with prospective partners.

Zaidi Farms Limited: Engaged in livestock, crop cultivation, and fisheries, the farm showcased its large-scale agribusiness operations and livestock crossbreeding efforts.

Debmark Allied Farms: The farm exhibited its range of herbal teas, capsules, and natural seasonings while also connecting with new suppliers for raw materials.

Rucky Sab Collections: Specializing in traditional clay pottery, the vendor reported strong engagement and sales throughout the event.

Voices from the field

Farmers and buyers alike praised the fair for its practicality and impact. Hauwa Salihu, a farmer from Kaduna, said she attended after seeing the flyer sent by her child.

“I bought strawberry and lavender seedlings, along with organic fertilizer. The advice I received from the vendors was extremely helpful,” she said.

Salisu Ibrahim, another attendee, noted that he found useful tools and received free consultancy.

“I’m truly pleased and would love to see more events like this in northern Nigeria,” he said.

Government endorsement and community impact

Government officials commended the initiative, with Dr. Yusuf Sale, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Technology, describing the fair as a platform for empowerment.

“By showcasing innovations and fostering knowledge exchange, we are empowering communities to take charge of their food systems,” he noted.

Muhammad Rili, General Manager of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency (KADA), called the fair a “timely and strategic initiative,” while the Kaduna State Chairman of AFAN lauded the public-private collaboration between KSMC and Small Homes.

“This event shows the power of partnerships in transforming agriculture at the grassroots level,” he added.

A festive atmosphere

Beyond business and learning, the fair also offered a festive atmosphere, with local food vendors providing snacks and refreshments, contributing to a vibrant and engaging experience for attendees.
