The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed food items to victims of a military airstrike in the Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
The intervention was facilitated by a member of the House of Representatives representing the Binji/Silame Federal Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mani Maishinko.
Speaking during the distribution exercise at his residence in Sokoto, Katami stated that, as the representative of the affected communities, he found it necessary to seek support from various agencies.
He explained that following the tragic incident, which claimed the lives of 11 individuals and injured six others last year, he promptly visited the scene to commiserate with the victims and their families.
“I immediately brought the matter to the attention of the National Assembly and urged the Federal Government to ensure justice for the communities,” he said. “I also requested relief assistance from NEMA and other relevant agencies.”
According to him, the food items were received through NEMA’s Sokoto office, and every victim from the two affected communities would benefit from the distribution.
Also speaking to journalists during the flag-off, a representative of NEMA in Sokoto State, Halliru Aliyu emphasized that the agency is mandated to provide relief in the aftermath of such unfortunate events.
He commended the efforts of the lawmaker for facilitating the provision of the materials and ensuring timely intervention for the affected people.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to both the lawmaker and NEMA, saying the assistance would go a long way in minimizing the hardship faced by the affected communities.
The food items donated included 300 bags of 25kg rice, 300 bags of maize, 30 cartons of Maggi, 30 cartons of tomatoes, 30 cartons of salt, and vegetable oil.
