Lagos farmers benefit from ₦11.4m agricultural boost

A total of 87 farmers in Lagos State have received farming grants worth ₦11.4 million. The money was given under the 2025 Agricultural Support Programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI-ASP), led by the Federal Government.

The event took place on Monday at Lagos House in Ikeja. Twenty-seven young people and women were each given ₦200,000 and farming tools to help them grow their farms.

The other 60 farmers, selected from different senatorial districts in the state, got ₦100,000 each through a programme called “Every Home A Garden 2.0.”

These farmers are involved in different types of farming, such as fish farming, growing vegetables, making garri, poultry farming, beekeeping, and making zobo drinks.

To get young people interested in farming, 120 students from 24 schools will take part in a new phase of the Young Farmers Club (YFC 2.0). Each school sent five junior and five senior students.

This is part of an effort to teach children about farming and help them learn how to grow food.

At the event, the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, praised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for giving a ₦60 million grant to support the programme.

She explained that the Renewed Hope Initiative has four main parts: the Women Agricultural Support Programme, Youth Agricultural Support Programme, Every Home A Garden, and the Young Farmers Club. These were launched across all 36 states in Nigeria.

“This programme is helping women and young people see farming as a good and dependable way to make a living,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu said. “In Lagos, we are working toward a future where no one goes to bed hungry, and more people can earn a living, especially women and youth.”

Also speaking at the event, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, said the programme is a smart way to help families grow their own food and create more jobs. She encouraged the farmers to use the grants wisely.

Two farming experts, Femi Ojelade and Omolara Oguntuyi, also spoke. They stressed the importance of organic farming and sustainable practices. They told young people that farming has a strong future.

“Agriculture brings wealth. Oil may not last forever, but farming will. Let’s waste less, eat healthy, and care for the environment,” they said.

The event was attended by the grant recipients, government officials, and students from the Young Farmers Club across Lagos State.
