Niger state governor, Abubakar Sani-Bello has disclosed that Bobi Grazing Reserve has abundant pasture to sell to herdrmen across the state and the country.
The governor stated this on Monday during a visit with members of his cabinet to the grazing reserve, which is located in Mariga and Mashegu local government areas of the state.
According to him, the pasture available in the reserve could conveniently feed 9,000 cows.
“We can start making money from the pasture here. We have too much pasture available now. The pasture we have now will be able to feed 9000 cows and in the grazing reserve, we do not have up to 2000 cows yet.
“This means we have more than enough pasture and going forward in the scheme, we will be selling off the excess pasture to any part of the country and the world,” he said.
Sani-Bello further said that mechanisms were being put in place to improve the capacity of the cows to give 1,000 litres of milk daily from the current quantity the herdsmen get.
The consultant of the Reserve, Alhaji Abbas Tafida explained that currently, the amount being charged to feed a cow is N125 while a ram is N10 per day, adding that this would enable the cows to produce 1,000 litres worth of milk every day.
He also lamented that the pastures were currently being wasted because there were no enough cows to feed on the large amount of pasture produced.
Tafida explained that for the insemination programme in the reserve, they were working to get at least 1,000 herdsmen to bring in five cows for insemination, adding that this would increase the number of cows in the reserve.
