The Kano State Government has announced plans to plant five million trees across the state in a bold effort to tackle climate change and improve the state’s environment.

Dr. Dahir M. Hasim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing journalists.
Dr. Hasim emphasized the cultural and environmental significance of trees in Kano, noting their role in air purification and environmental beautification.
“Kano has a history of roads lined with date trees. Unfortunately, many were cut down due to urbanization and ignorance,” he said.
He explained that the tree-planting initiative would involve partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and climate-conscious individuals to ensure broad-based support and effective implementation.
“We want to assure citizens that this project is real. We will provide platforms for public participation and ensure that all planted trees are accounted for, to avoid neglect and wasted efforts,” he added.
The commissioner also revealed that the project would leverage technology, including the Open Data Kit (ODK), to coordinate activities and monitor progress.
Dr. Hasim called on residents to actively support and participate in the initiative, stressing that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility between the government and the people.
