The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) has engaged Bauchi stakeholders on development of comprehensive feed and fodder sector database to mitigate high cost of feeds in the country.

The Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Dr Sabi Abdulahi spoke at the state level review of the draft National Animal Feed and Fodder policy document on Thursday in Bauchi.

He urged the stakeholders to remain resolute and explore their wealth of experience while reviewing the policy document.

The minister represented by State Coordinator FMAFS, Mr Daniel Abarshi said the state level review of the draft policy document had become necessary.

“It is my hope that this gathering will discuss other critical issues that will add value, enrich the document and make its implementation seamless.”

Abdulahi explained that FMAFS, through the Department of Animal Husbandry Services, successfully conducted first and second summit in 2021, 2023 with stakeholders.

“These review sessions attracted key stakeholders in the livestock industry particularly the feed and fodder sub sector.

“During these engagements, critical issues were raised on the need to strategically develop a comprehensive feed and fodder sector database, harness crop residues to boost feed security and safeguard the environment.

“As well, prioritising efforts and investment in harnessing alternative feed resources, strengthens coordination of regulations and standards among others to mitigate the challenges of high cost feed in the country,” he said.

Earlier, Director, Animal husbandry Services of FMAFS, Mrs Winnie Lai-Solarin said the objective of the stakeholders review at the state level was to share knowledge.

“It is to ensure that the state is recognised in the review process to harness and boost the animal feed and fodder policy for the country.

“To also ensure that stakeholders’ voices are heard in the policy formulation and implementation,” she said.

Lai-Solarin urged the participants to use the state level review meeting to develop a well-reviewed animal feed policy tailored towards its sustainable security in the country.
