Bottled water may seem like a simple product, but taste, mineral content, sourcing, and even packaging can set brands apart. A recent ranking of popular bottled water brands reveals a clear divide between those that deliver a refreshing experience and those that fall flat.

The bottom tier: When water misses the mark

Some brands struggled to impress taste testers, with complaints ranging from flat flavor to unpleasant aftertastes.

Worst: Dasani is actually high in sodium

Dannon Spring Water, for instance, was criticized for offering little beyond basic hydration, lacking electrolytes or any distinctive qualities. Similarly, Arrowhead Water drew harsh reactions, with one tester describing it as tasting far from a fresh natural source.

Another controversial entrant, Boxed Water, sparked debate—not so much for taste, but for its eco-friendly packaging claims. While the paper-based design aims to reduce plastic waste, critics argue that tap water remains the most sustainable option.

Middle of the pack: Mixed reviews and divided opinions

A number of widely available brands landed in the “average” category, where taste and quality varied depending on preference.

Poland Spring, a staple in some regions, received mixed feedback, with some testers noting a slightly salty or sour taste.

Propel Fitness Water, known for its added vitamins and flavored options, was described as having a somewhat metallic or sports-drink-like taste—appealing to some, but not all.

Meanwhile, Ice Mountain stood out for its neutral profile, though a faint mineral aftertaste kept it from ranking higher.

Other brands, such as Cisowianka, earned praise for cleanliness and freshness but were considered less distinctive overall.

Top performers: Clean taste and unique sources

At the top of the rankings are brands that combine smooth taste, mineral balance, and appealing sourcing stories.

Fiji Water emerged as a standout, sourced from an artesian aquifer in the South Pacific. Its smooth, refreshing taste and distinctive square bottle helped it earn high marks.

Acqua Panna, originating from Tuscany, Italy, also impressed testers. The water is naturally filtered through limestone over many years, giving it a soft, slightly mineral-rich profile.

Other high-ranking brands include:

  • Bai, praised for its flavored options and added electrolytes
  • Just Water, noted for its eco-friendly packaging and clean taste
  • Hint, which infuses water with natural fruit flavors without added sugars
  • Eternal Water and Waiākea, both recognized for their natural sourcing and balanced mineral content

What really sets bottled water apart?

The ranking highlights that not all bottled water is created equal. Key differentiators include:

  • Source (spring, artesian, or purified)
  • Mineral composition, which affects taste
  • Filtration process
  • Packaging and sustainability claims

While some brands focus on purity and neutrality, others lean into flavor, added nutrients, or eco-conscious packaging to stand out in a crowded market.

The bottom line

Even with something as basic as water, subtle differences matter. Taste testers consistently favored brands that deliver a clean, smooth experience without strong aftertastes, while those with chemical, metallic, or flat profiles ranked lower.

Ultimately, the “best” bottled water often comes down to personal preference—but as this ranking shows, some brands clearly rise above the rest.
