Dr Makinta Abdulkadir, an agronomist and Managing Director of Kanem Agro Allied Firm, has urged Borno farmers to adopt improved storage methods to reduce post-harvest losses.
Abdulkadir made the call in an interview with reporters in Maiduguri.
He identified moisture, pests, poor handling and inadequate storage facilities as major causes of post-harvest losses.
The agronomist advised farmers to properly dry grains before storage and to use hermetic bags, airtight containers or improved silos to protect produce from moisture, insects and rodents.
He also urged farmers to keep storage facilities clean, dry and well-ventilated, and to regularly inspect them for pests and water leakages.
Abdulkadir advised farmers to sort produce and remove damaged grains before storage, while maintaining appropriate moisture levels to preserve quality.
He said farmers should avoid mixing newly harvested produce with old stocks to prevent cross-infestation.
According to him, improved storage will enable farmers to preserve produce longer and reduce the pressure to sell immediately after harvest.
He called on the government, development partners and private investors to invest in affordable storage facilities, particularly in farming communities.
Abdulkadir said reducing post-harvest losses would increase farmers’ income, improve food availability and contribute to food security.
He also urged agricultural extension workers and farmers’ associations to intensify sensitisation on improved post-harvest handling and storage practices.
