Thunderstorms and sunshine forecast across Nigeria this weekend — NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has said that there will be a mix of thunderstorms and sunshine in different parts of Nigeria from Friday to Sunday.

In a weather report released on Thursday in Abuja, NiMet said thunderstorms are expected in the northern region on Friday.

It said that light to moderate rain is likely in the morning in Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Bauchi States. Other northern states will see sunny weather with some clouds.

Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected later in the afternoon or evening in the north.

In central Nigeria, the morning will be mostly sunny with a few clouds.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are likely in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger, and Plateau States.

In the south, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with light rain possible in Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

Moderate rain is likely in many parts of the southern region later in the day.

On Saturday, the northern region will have sunny skies in the morning with a few clouds.

There may be isolated thunderstorms with light rain in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, Zamfara, Yobe, and Kaduna States.

In the afternoon or evening, moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.

In central Nigeria, there could be light rain and thunderstorms in the morning in Niger and Plateau States.

Later in the afternoon or evening, more thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain are likely in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau States.

In the south, cloudy weather is expected in the morning, with light rain possible in Abia, Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.

Moderate to heavy rain is likely in the afternoon or evening in many parts of the southern region.

On Sunday, thunderstorms are expected again in the northern region, with moderate rain in the morning in Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States.

Other northern areas will have sunny weather with some clouds.

Thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in the afternoon or evening in Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno, and Yobe States.

In central Nigeria, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, and there may be thunderstorms and moderate rain in the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Plateau States.

Light to moderate rain is expected later in the day in Benue, the FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau States.

In the south, morning rain is possible in Ondo, Edo, Ogun, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with cloudy weather expected for the rest of the day.

In the afternoon or evening, moderate to heavy rain is expected in many parts of the southern region.

NiMet advised people to be careful, as strong winds may come before the rain in places where thunderstorms are expected.

It warned people to secure loose items to prevent accidents and to avoid driving in heavy rain. It also advised unplugging electrical devices and staying away from tall trees during storms.

Airline companies were advised to get specific weather reports for airports from NiMet to help them plan flights safely.

NiMet encouraged everyone to keep checking its website for the latest weather updates.
