Sokoto authorities launch Yuletide road safety drive

The Sokoto Zonal Field Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on agencies, groups, and individuals to support safer roads during the yuletide season.

Mr Tukur Abubakar, NEMA’s Safety, Protection and Rescue Officer, made the appeal while launching the 2025 Operation Eagle Eye on Wednesday in Sokoto. Abubakar represented the Zonal Head, Aliyu Kafindangi, and said the exercise aims to enhance public safety during the festive period.

He explained that NEMA vehicles and equipment, supported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), would be stationed at strategic locations across the state. A dedicated team would provide medical support, including intensive care services and rescue extrication, for prompt response to any road traffic accidents.

Abubakar added that the joint team would also ensure the free flow of traffic along congested routes caused by increased movement of motorists and commuters during the yuletide.

“NEMA will continue its efforts toward building resilient communities during this festive season. Our officers will work closely with relevant agencies to monitor risk-prone areas, provide emergency support, and ensure rapid response where necessary,” he said.

He noted that while the yuletide is a time of joy, celebration, and family reunions, it is also marked by increased road traffic, reckless driving, speeding, fatigue, and disregard for traffic rules—factors that often lead to avoidable accidents, injuries, and loss of lives.

Abubakar thanked the Sokoto State Government, disaster managers, partner agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, transport unions, and the media for their unwavering commitment to public safety.

“As we celebrate this festive season, let us remember that no celebration is worth a life lost. Let us drive responsibly, remain vigilant, and look out for one another. Together, we can make this yuletide safe, peaceful, and accident-free,” he added.

The operation began at Sultan Abubakar Airport Junction and was attended by officials of Sokoto Road Marshalls, Red Cross Society, State Emergency Management Agency, FRSC, and other stakeholders.
