Residents of Ikorodu on Tuesday called for urgent intervention to address poor sanitation and offensive odors at Ikorodu garage and the adjoining Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) terminal.
In separate interviews, residents described the transport hub as one of Lagos’s busiest areas.
They noted that the persistent accumulation of refuse at the facility posed environmental and public health concerns, demanding immediate attention from relevant authorities.
They urged the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Ikorodu Local Government, transport unions, and traders to collaborate on waste management and maintaining a cleaner environment.
Miss Happiness Oghogho attributed the situation to weak enforcement of environmental sanitation laws in the area.
She called for stronger enforcement, discouraging indiscriminate dumping and advocating sanctions for offenders.
Mr. Olami Olasmile suggested establishing a community environmental task force to support government efforts.
He stated that deploying personnel to monitor the area and discourage illegal dumping would help restore cleanliness at the garage.
Mrs. Kudirat Shobowale said the unpleasant odor had become a daily issue for commuters, especially in the early hours.
She urged authorities to provide additional waste bins, public toilets, and ensure prompt refuse evacuation to approved dumpsites.
Mr. Azeez Bello criticized the monthly sanitation exercise held on the last Saturday of each month, saying it was insufficient to tackle the sanitation challenges.
He explained that the few hours allocated were inadequate given the volume of activity at the hub.
Bello also called for stricter enforcement of the Thursday market sanitation, noting that refuse collected during the exercise was often dumped around the roundabout, roadside, and behind the BRT terminal instead of being properly evacuated.
He emphasized the need for prompt removal of refuse to official dumpsites.
Mr. Sodiq Lawal, a bus driver, blamed indiscriminate dumping by traders, commuters, and motorists for the poor sanitary conditions.
He appealed for sustained public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of environmental laws to promote proper waste disposal.
Lawal also called for better collaboration among government agencies, transport operators, traders, and the public.
He expressed hope that consistent waste collection, improved sanitation facilities, and effective regulation enforcement would restore cleanliness at the transport hub.
