Following the recent boat accident in Zumba, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has launched a sensitization campaign in Shiroro Local Government Area to raise awareness on flood risks and boat safety among riverine communities.
The programme, held at the Chairman’s Office in Kuta, brought together traditional rulers, community representatives, and key stakeholders to discuss prevention measures, early warning systems, and safe navigation practices.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Shiroro LGA, Sanusi Saidu Bussa welcomed participants and pledged the council’s continued support for initiatives aimed at protecting lives and property.
Speaking on behalf of the NSEMA Director General, Adamu Barau Kuta, Executive Director (Administration), said the Zumba mishap prompted targeted outreach to at-risk settlements. He conveyed the DG’s condolences to bereaved families and urged residents to adhere strictly to safety guidelines.
“The safety of our people is paramount. We urge communities to take these warnings seriously and adopt the safety measures provided,” Kuta said.
Delivering the main lecture, Abdulsalam A. Zumba, NSEMA’s Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, outlined early warning signs, boat mishap risks, and emergency preparedness tips. He cautioned against overloading boats, reckless navigation, and ignoring weather advisories.
Internal Auditor, Abubakar Ubale Shinfidan Kuta, stressed the heavy economic and social toll of such disasters and called for sustained community cooperation in safety campaigns.
During the interactive session, community leaders, including Umar Isah Danbate, Sarkin Ruwan Kwata-Zumba, raised concerns over submerged logs and sandbanks that pose navigation hazards. NSEMA officials assured participants that these issues would be escalated to Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for intervention.
Closing the event, Bussa thanked attendees, urged residents to make proper use of relief materials, and prayed for safe journeys.
NSEMA coordinates disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across Niger State, with a mandate to protect lives, property, and the environment.
