NiMet predicts thunderstorms, rain across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says there will be thunderstorms and rain across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.

NiMet shared this weather forecast on Sunday in Abuja. It said there will be morning thunderstorms on Monday in the northern part of the country, with moderate rain in Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

Later in the day, thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa States.

NiMet warned that flooding might happen in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto States during this time.

In the central region, light rain is expected in parts of Niger State in the morning.

In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with light rain will occur in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi States.

There is a high chance of flooding in parts of Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger States during this period.

In the southern region, cloudy skies with light, scattered rain are expected in Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States in the morning.

Moderate rain will fall later in the day in Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.

Flooding may happen in Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during this period.

On Tuesday morning, thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected in Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, and Kaduna States.

In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rain will occur in Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Gombe States.

Light rain is expected in the morning in the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi States in the central region.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rain are expected in the FCT, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Kwara States.

In the south, cloudy skies with light rain will affect Oyo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Lagos, and Bayelsa States in the morning.

Rain will continue over most of the southern region later in the day.

On Wednesday morning, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States.

In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rain will cover the entire northern region.

Light rain is expected in the morning in Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau States in the central region.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rain will cover the central region.

In the southern region, light rain is expected in the morning in Enugu, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa States.

Rain will continue in the south during the afternoon and evening.

NiMet advised people to avoid driving during heavy rain and warned states at risk of flash floods to activate emergency systems immediately.

Farmers were told not to apply fertilisers or pesticides just before the rain to avoid losing nutrients. Vulnerable people should wear warm clothes at night because temperatures will be low.

People should secure loose objects so they don’t cause accidents. Electrical appliances should be unplugged, and people should stay away from tall trees to avoid injury from falling branches.

NiMet also told airline operators to get detailed weather reports for airports from them to plan flights safely.

Finally, NiMet encouraged everyone to keep checking for weather updates on their website.
