The West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) will focus on the vital role insurers play in protecting economies and communities from the growing risks of climate-related disasters at its 2025 Education Conference.
The conference will take place from October 12 to 15 at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos. Hosted by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) on behalf of Nigeria’s insurance industry, it will bring together delegates from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and other West African nations.
According to a statement by Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the conference will explore climate-resilient insurance models, regulatory frameworks, innovations in digital claims processing, green underwriting, regional collaboration, and public-private partnerships. Incentives such as premium discounts for low-carbon assets and government-backed reinsurance pools will also be discussed.
With the theme “The West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change,” participants will learn best practices from across Anglophone West Africa and engage with leaders shaping the future of climate-aware insurance in the region.
“As the global insurance industry faces pressure to align with the Paris Agreement, West African insurers must also evolve. This means adopting sustainable practices, integrating environmental risk into underwriting, and creating inclusive insurance products to protect vulnerable populations,” the statement noted.
It added that Nigeria, with its strong insurance market, regional influence, and commitment to sustainable development, is a fitting host. The country’s vibrant culture and hospitality also promise an enriching experience for all attendees.
Confirmed dignitaries and speakers include Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of NAICOM, who will deliver the keynote address; Mr. Bockarie Kaloko, Deputy Minister of Finance, Sierra Leone; Mr. Wole Oshin, Group Managing Director, Custodian Investments Plc; and Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Ghana. Regulators, government officials, insurance professionals, and development partners from across the region will also participate.
The WAICA 2025 Education Conference is expected to be a landmark event, strengthening regional cooperation and equipping insurers with the knowledge and tools needed to address climate change challenges in West Africa.
