A fatal auto crash, involving a commercial bus and a truck, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has killed 10 persons, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident occurred at about 8:05 p.m. on Sunday near Sapade Bridge in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to the corps, the crash involved a white Sinotruk truck bearing a Dangote inscription and a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with Lagos registration number EKY 290 YM.
The FRSC explained that the bus, which was conveying 18 passengers, rammed into the truck after the truck driver allegedly reversed on the expressway when he missed his route.
Preliminary investigations by the agency identified speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving as the major factors responsible for the crash.
The corps disclosed that the deceased comprised nine adult men and one male child, while the injured victims included four adult men and two women. Two other male passengers escaped unhurt.
FRSC rescue teams evacuated the injured to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
The crashed vehicles have been taken into police custody by officers of the Ishara Division pending further investigation and evacuation.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
He cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers and operators of articulated vehicles, against reversing on highways, speeding and engaging in dangerous driving practices.
Ogunjobi also urged road users to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes in order to prevent avoidable road crashes.
