The Ibeju-lekki Local Government Council has embarked on a clean-up initiative to tackle environmental abuse in market areas and community environment.
The Chairman of the council, Mr Sesan Olowa disclosed this in an interview in Ibeju-lekki, on Wednesday.
Olowa explained that the initiative was geared towards curbing indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental pollution within the council area with a view to ensure cleaner environment.
He disclosed that exercise was been done by the Department of Environmental Services, in collaboration with the Cleaner Ibeju-Lekki Initiative and the Ibeju-Lekki Community Security Corps (Folumo).
He added that the authorities concerned had already embarked on a strategic clean-up operation to parts of Lakowe and Awoyaya communities in Ibeju-lekki town.
According to him, the operation is led by the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr Ajumobi Lateef, and the Chief Security Officer, Shakiru Adebanjo.
Olowa said that during the exercise, officials observed that traders in Lakowe area were reluctant to vacate walkways which had been illegally converted into trading zones, defacing major roads in the process.
“The situation in Awoyaya, another town in the council area is more severe, with high level of street trading and encroachment on public infrastructure.
“Traders were found to have extended their stalls dangerously close to motor lanes, posing risks to road users and public safety.
“This present administration will not accept such illegal trading activities on the walk way, because it poses danger to not just the traders but motorists as well,” he said.
The chairman said that the clean-up exercise was been carried out in strict compliance with operational guidelines.
Olowa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, assuring residents that routine monitoring and enforcement would continue, so as to ensure a clean and safe environment for all.
