Nigeria’s power grid, commonly called ‘national grid’, has collapsed for the forth time in six months, with the country currently generating 0.80 Megawatt of electricity.

ASHENEWS earlier reported President Bola Tinubu HERE decrying Nigeria’s power generation capacity, saying that the capacity of 4.5 gigawatts is shameful. “we must also increase electricity generation and distribution throughout the country,” he said.

A check on the website of Independent System Operator, an autonomous arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) indicated that power plants’ contribution to the grid began to decline around 2 pm to 2,797.16MW from the average of 3,417.99MW around 1 pm.

The electricity contribution further declined to 1,020.08 around 3 pm before dramatically falling to 0.80 by 4 pm.

The 0.80 was generated by the Trans-Amadi Power plant.

This is the fourth power grid collapse in 2024.

The Kaduna Electric (KAEDCO), in a statement by the Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi on Saturday, said, “We regret to inform you that the power outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to System Collapse of the National Grid. The collapse occurred at about 3:10 pm, hence the loss of supply on all our outgoing feeders.

“Power supply shall be restored as soon as the National Grid is powered back. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.”

Also confirming the collapse, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) said the incident occurred around 3:09 pm.

A public announcement signed by its head of Corporate Affairs, Emeka Ezeh, noted that the situation led to the loss of power supply.

“This is to inform our esteemed customers of a general system collapse which occurred at 15:09 hours today, 6th July 2024. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network.”

“Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.”
