ASHENEWS reports that the United Nations has tasked Nigeria and the world to end its addiction to fossil fuel stating that the days of oil-driven triggered economic growth are over.
According to her, the dependence of Nigeria on fossil fuel for electricity generation is alarming.
Speaking during the 1st Niger State Green Economy Summit in Minna on Tuesday, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed noted that net zero pledges have already encompassed three-quarters of the global economy.
“There is no long-term future for oil. Our global progress in meeting the climate emergency is still too slow while the direction of travel is ambiguous.
“Nigeria must set a shift and chart a new way forward that leaves no one behind in the transition to clean energy and renewable sources”, she said.
Mohammed suggested that the government needs to expand access to reliable, clean, and affordable energy for everyone.
The Deputy Secretary General said that investing in green economy will unleash the human and sustainable part of the nation.
She applauded the Niger state government in coming up with the initiative of the Green Economy Summit especially as the state is uniquely positioned to be one of the first movers to engage in green growth and become a leader in green economy.
