AGILE Training: Kogi govt deepens second-chance education

Kogi government has strengthened non-formal education as 130 facilitators undergo intensive AGILE training to raise standards, widen access and improve learning outcomes.

The two-day capacity-building programme was organised by the Ministry of Education for facilitators from centres across Kogi’s three senatorial districts.

The training focuses on improving teaching quality in second-chance and alternative education programmes for adolescents and adult learners.

AGILE State Project Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Oricha, said on Sunday in Okene skilled facilitators are critical to achieving the project’s education and empowerment objectives.

“Without competent facilitators, second-chance education cannot deliver meaningful literacy, numeracy and life skills,” Oricha said.

He said the programme, delivered with Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID), targets improved access, quality and equity in non-formal education delivery statewide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the curriculum covers English Language, Mathematics, Civic Literacy and Basic Science using participatory and learner-centred approaches.

“The emphasis is on post-literacy manuals, effective instruction and techniques that actively involve learners,” Oricha explained.

He urged facilitators to adopt professionalism, noting their commitment directly affects learner outcomes and programme success.

Component Lead, Hajia Mariam Bello, said the training ensures uniformity and consistency across all non-formal education centres.

“Facilitators received structured guidance on lesson sequencing, integrated teaching and effective learner engagement,” Bello said.

She noted participatory methods would create inclusive classrooms responsive to adolescents’ and adults’ diverse learning needs.

Bello added that the approach aligns with AGILE’s goals of improved literacy, numeracy and practical life skills.

PIBCID Executive Director, Mrs Racheal Akande, reaffirmed support for capacity development and behaviour-change initiatives in education.

“Our partnership focuses on improving teaching quality and sustaining impact within non-formal education systems,” Akande said.

Participants pledged to apply the skills acquired to improve learning outcomes and strengthen second-chance education across Kogi.
