China has officially become the world’s largest car exporter, surpassing long-time leaders Japan and Germany in a dramatic rise that has reshaped the global automotive industry.
Unprecedented growth in export volume
The speed of China’s ascent is remarkable. In 2019, the country exported approximately 700,000 vehicles, ranking it as a relatively minor player in global car exports. By 2024, that figure had surged to roughly 5.5 million vehicles, representing nearly an eightfold increase in just five years.
This growth propelled China past Japan, which exported 4.2 million vehicles in 2024, and Germany, which exported 3.4 million. Mexico ranks third with 3.5 million exports.
| Country | 2019 Exports | 2024 Exports | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | 0.7 million | 5.5 million | +685% |
| Japan | 4.8 million | 4.2 million | -13% |
| Germany | 3.5 million | 3.4 million | -3% |
Electric vehicles drive the boom
Electric vehicles (EVs) have been the primary catalyst behind China’s surge in exports. Chinese automakers have aggressively expanded into overseas markets with cheaper EVs, plug-in hybrids, and budget-friendly cars.
Major Chinese brands leading this expansion include:
- BYD
- Chery (top exporter with 1.14 million vehicles in 2024)
- SAIC (the second-largest with 929,000 exports)
- Geely
- Changan
In April 2026 alone, China’s EV exports jumped 40% year-over-year to 278,081 units, reinforcing its dominance in the rapidly expanding global EV market.
Global reach expands
Chinese vehicles are now present across multiple continents:
- Europe: Primary market, accounting for about half of all Chinese EV exports since 2018
- Southeast Asia: Second-largest segment at ~20% of exports
- Latin America: Sales reached approximately $6 billion in 2025
- Middle East: Significant growth market
- Africa: Most dramatic growth with 184% year-over-year increase in EV imports (Jan–Sep 2025)
Historic shift in auto industry leadership
For decades, Japan and Germany dominated global car exports, with Japan exporting 4.8 million units in 2019 and Germany exporting 3.5 million. China, once known for copying foreign automotive designs, has transformed into the world’s top vehicle exporter.
This milestone follows China’s earlier achievement as the world’s largest car producer in 2009, when it surpassed Japan in manufacturing output. Today, China accounts for nearly one-third of global vehicle production, with an annual output exceeding 30 million vehicles.
In 2024, China produced over 31 million vehicles while exporting nearly 6 million cars. The country exported $90.3 billion worth of cars in 2024, primarily to Russia ($15.2 billion), the United Kingdom ($5.09 billion), and the United Arab Emirates ($4.75 billion).
Industry analysts confirm that China’s top position is now firmly established, with the nation expected to maintain its leadership as global demand for affordable electric vehicles continues rising.
