Retired police officers in Katsina have finalised plans to support a nationwide protest on April 20 in Abuja over the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The retirees, under the Association of Retired Police Officers, announced the plan in a statement issued in Katsina on Sunday by spokesperson Shehu Suleiman.
The decision followed a general meeting on Saturday led by Chairman DSP Kabir Bawa (rtd), where members discussed challenges facing retired officers nationwide, particularly under the police pension scheme.
Suleiman said the protest, described by organisers as a “do or die” action, aims to urge President Bola Tinubu to assent to a bill already passed by the Senate to address pension issues.
“Central to the demands is the removal of police retirees from the CPS and alignment with other security agencies, such as the military and intelligence services, which are not under the scheme,” he said.
He also criticised a recent National Pension Commission (PENCOM) policy allowing serving police officers to withdraw up to 25 per cent of their contributions, warning it could undermine the campaign to exit the CPS.
The association plans a sensitisation campaign to educate serving officers on the long-term implications of the policy and called on members to remain united in pursuing improved welfare and equity.
