In the past year or so, I have become a sad man. I feel sorry for myself, as I cannot do much to stem the tide. I also feel sad for our youth, who are daily ensnared by the ravaging trend. But I am more distressed for Nigeria, my country, for breeding such youth. We are mortgaging our country’s future by sacrificing our youth’s intellectual growth to Artificial Intelligence, AI. I recall our growing days with nostalgia. I started reading my senior sisters’ novels, the Mills and Boon series, and those by Agatha Christie at age nine. At the same…
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) needs to take security problems at airports and during flights more seriously. Right now, it seems like the agency isn’t doing enough and is only picking certain cases to handle, which encourages bad behavior from some passengers. The NCAA is a fully independent agency responsible for regulating aviation in Nigeria. The Civil Aviation Act of 2022 gives it the power to manage safety in the aviation sector, supervise airports and air traffic services, and also handle economic matters in the industry without interference. Nigeria is a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),…
As the world gets ready for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil (November 10–21, 2025), Nigeria and other African countries are being encouraged to stop asking for climate funding and start focusing on building their own green economy. Professor George Nwangwu, head of the Global Centre for Law, Business and Economy (GCLBE) and organizer of the Africa Climate Forum, told reporters that Nigeria should use COP30 to attract investors to its green economy. He believes this is better than asking for grants, which might not always be used properly. Nwangwu, a law professor at Nile University,…
I just learned that after months of painstaking intelligence work, authorities have apprehended Mahmud Muhammad Usman, the self-styled “Emir of Ansaru,” and his deputy Mahmud al-Nigeri, known as Malam Mahmuda, the man behind the Mahmuda terrorist group that has been tormenting my people in Borgu, a geo-cultural space that stretches from Kebbi through Niger and northern Kwara and spills into northern and central Benin Republic. Their arrest has effectively dismantled the command structure of the al-Qaeda-linked Ansaru group, notorious for audacious kidnappings, attacks, and terror campaigns across northern Nigeria. This is personal to me on so many levels. A major…
The Federal Government has clarified that it has not awarded any contract for the reconstruction of the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos, despite claims that Julius Berger estimated the work to cost about ₦6.3 trillion. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this known on Saturday in Abakaliki, when the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, paid him a courtesy visit. Umahi explained that the defects on the 3rd Mainland Bridge and the Carter Bridge were not new, adding that the government had been holding discussions with stakeholders to address the problems. He noted that the 3rd…

The Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) has trained 20 healthcare providers across Niger State on postpartum family planning (PPFP) methods to help new mothers access contraceptive services immediately after childbirth. Postpartum family planning allows women to receive methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) within 10 minutes of placenta delivery or within 48 hours after birth. If this window is missed, the woman can only receive the method four weeks later. “This is about getting women before they leave the labour ward,” said Dorcas Abu, the State Family Planning Coordinator. “Many don’t return for family planning after delivery, and the…
