Some Nigerian stakeholders in the Northeast have identified obsolete environmental and forestry laws as a trigger for the continuous plundering of forests for firewood and charcoal in the zone. Others say that acute scarcity of kerosene and high cost of gas are major obstacles to effective conservation of forest resources against illegal logging in the region. Niger state governor, Abubakar Bello has directed immediate ban on sales of some categories of motorcycles across the state. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane disclosed in a statement on Saturday, said the ban covered motorcycles described as Bajaj Boxer, Qiujeng, Honda ACE, Jingchen, with engine capacity of 185 Cubic Centimetres and above. The Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail operations resumed on Saturday following the suspension of strike by railway workers. The Managing Director of Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria disclosed this in a telephone interview. The NRC management and the union had directed workers to resume work with immediate effect in a joint communique suspending the strike on Friday night. The railway workers had on Thursday embarked on a three-day warning strike over staff welfare issues, thus paralysing rail transportation across the country.
The National Economic Council (NEC) says President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a fresh N656 billion Bridge Financing Facility to the 36 States. Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, disclosed this on Thursday at a virtual NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and anchored from the Presidential Villa, Abuja. According to the budget, N84,375,180,518, representing 43% is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, to include personnel cost, N37,004,732,226 and N47,730,448,292 overhead cost. Capital expenditures is estimated at N110.620,425.00, representing 57%.
