The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, recently emphasized that the ECOWAS Parliament is actively employing diplomatic strategies to address the threats posed by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to leave the Economic Community of West African States.
Kalu assured that there is no immediate cause for alarm, highlighting that the bloc is addressing these concerns through parliamentary diplomacy.
Kalu explained that letters have already been sent to the respective governments, and there are plans to visit these countries to engage directly with their leaders.
The goal is to encourage them to remain part of the ECOWAS family, acknowledging that while grievances may exist, dialogue is crucial to resolving issues.

He stressed the importance of unity within ECOWAS and the need to prevent these countries from exiting.
Kalu, however, also mentioned that even in the worst-case scenario, where these nations proceed with their exit, ECOWAS would not face a financial crisis.
He pointed out that ECOWAS has multiple revenue sources, including the Community Levy, and emphasized that the organization has other ways to generate funds if necessary.
Overall, Kalu expressed confidence that diplomatic efforts would yield positive results, ensuring the continued unity and strength of the bloc.
