MURIC backs EFCC, urges NASS pass unexplained wealth bill

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has thrown its weight behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s recent call for the passage of the Unexplained Wealth Bill by the National Assembly.

In a statement released on Saturday, July 19, 2025, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, urged lawmakers to act without further delay, stressing that the bill would strengthen the fight against corruption in both public and private sectors.

According to Akintola, the bill, if enacted, would compel greater probity and accountability by giving law enforcement agencies the legal backing to question individuals whose lifestyles and assets do not match their known sources of income.

“This is not only a call in the right direction but also a call to action,” Akintola said. “So many kleptomaniacs, yahoo boys, kidnappers, and armed robbers escape detection due to the absence of this particular law.”

He noted that existing anti-corruption laws are too weak to ensure proper accountability, arguing that the unexplained wealth bill could drastically reduce financial recklessness and impunity across the country.

“We therefore call on the National Assembly to rescue the nation from the abyss of moral debauchery by hearkening to the call of the EFCC chairman to pass the Unexplained Wealth Bill into law,” he added.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede had recently urged the federal legislature to accelerate the passage of the bill as part of efforts to plug legal loopholes in the anti-corruption framework.
