Unlike ordinary rivers, Ihechi holds a peculiar rule: only women can immerse themselves in its waters. This exclusivity is not merely a matter of tradition but is enforced by a guardian of a most unusual nature – a snake.
According to local lore, this serpentine guardian watches over the river, deterring men from venturing into its depths. It is firmly believed that any attempt to harm the snake would invite catastrophic consequences upon the perpetrator. Such is the reverence for this creature that even if it were to deliver a bite, locals remain steadfast in their conviction that no harm would befall them.

As Okoro recounts, “The stream is called Ihechi. Only ladies are allowed to bathe and swim here. The snake does come by the side of the stream to welcome people, and no one will kill it. Killing of the snake attracts death, and if the snake bites you, nothing will happen to you.”
