…..APWEN celebrates as NSE names first female President in 65-year history

ASHENEWS reports that the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has applauded the Nigerian Society of Engineers for naming Engineer Mrs Margaret Aina Oguntala as the first female President in its 65-year history.

Oguntala would be succeeding former President Tasiu Gidari-Wudil, who announced this during a conference in Abuja.

Effective by January 1, 2024, Oguntala, previously serving as Deputy President for the past two years, will commence her tenure as the head of the Society, adhering to the regulations set forth by the NSE for a two-year term.

In a press statement by the APWEN President, Engr. Elizabeth Jumoke Eterigho, Oguntala’s election as NSE President serves as an inspirational milestone for women engineers in Nigeria and represents a significant step towards gender equality within the engineering profession.

“As the President of APWEN, I can not help but express my immense joy and pride that this groundbreaking achievement occurred during my tenure.

“The appointment of Engr. Margaret Oguntala symbolizes the growing recognition of the invaluable contributions made by female engineers to the advancement of our society. It sends a powerful signal that gender should never limit opportunities for anyone, irrespective of their field of expertise”, the statement read.

According to Eterigho, women engineers have consistently proven their capabilities and prowess in the engineering industry adding that this is a progressive step which demonstrates the Society’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment within the engineering profession and the country at large.

“We commend the present and past presidents, the Council, and every member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers for acknowledging this potential and embracing diversity by electing Engr. Oguntala as their President. “

Congratulating the new NSE President, APWEN express confidence that she will lead the Nigerian Society of Engineers to greater heights urging her to utilize her influential position to further promote the advancement of women in engineering.

The association also called on all stakeholders, government bodies, and industry leaders to join us in supporting Engr. Aina Oguntala as she begins this remarkable journey.

“As the first female President, we are confident that she will bring a fresh perspective, innovative ideas, and a deep commitment to empowering women engineers throughout Nigeria.

“We trust that she will leverage her expertise and leadership to foster mentorship programs, establish platforms for knowledge exchange, and advocate for policies that encourage female representation at all levels within and outside the engineering profession.

“APWEN remains steadfast in its mission to promote the professional development and empowerment of women engineers across Nigeria.

“We believe that Engr. Oguntala’s appointment will pave the way for numerous aspiring female engineers, inspiring them to overcome societal barriers and excel in their chosen field.”

The APWEN President then reaffirms APWEN’S unwavering commitment to championing the cause of women engineers, breaking gender barriers, and fostering an all-inclusive engineering community that harnesses the immense potential of every individual, irrespective of their gender.

She also congratulates all the successful elected executives including the female National Exco members of the NSE which include Engr. Rose Madaki, Engr Dr. Felicia Agubata, Engr. Rachel S. Ugye, Engr. Dr. Omolola Adetona on the success of their election.
