Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara has vowed to continue to protect the interests of the people of Rivers state, and also run an inclusive government that upholds the principles of justice and fairness to everyone.

The governor who broke his silence amid the political tension in the state, made this known in a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.

“And for our Rivers people, for your support, I assure you that we will continue to protect the interest of our people, do the best for everyone.

“Not minding your position or your class, our government is a responsible and inclusive government that our ears are opened and our eyes are also opened to the needs of our people.

“We will not disappoint you. We will continue to uphold that tenet, fairness, justice for everyone,” Fubara said.

Recall that the State Executive Council, had on Monday, approved the estimated budget of over ₦800 billion, tagged as the ‘Budget of Renewed Hope, Consolidation, and Continuity’ for the 2024 fiscal year.

The five lawmakers who sat at plenary on Wednesday, received the state’s 2024 budget proposal submitted by Governor Fubara for their review.

Also on Wednesday, the five-member Edison Ehie-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is also loyal to Governor Fubara, passed the 2024 budget proposal submitted by the governor.

On Monday, 27 members of the House of Assembly said to be loyal to the immediate past governor of the state, Nyesom Wike defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers announced their defection at the plenary, citing division in their party – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – as the reason for the move.

The other faction of lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike and led by Martin Amaewhule had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, but the move failed.

The crisis recently led to the burning of the State Assembly complex and factionalised the lawmakers into camps.
