Four people died and seven others were injured in three separate road accidents in Lagos on Wednesday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said.
The fatal accident occurred at Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway. It involved an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container and an interstate Toyota Hiace bus.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incidents in a statement made available to reporters in Lagos on Wednesday.
He said the agency received a distress call and dispatched a response team from its Epe Base.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the truck was travelling at excessive speed while ascending the bridge when it collided with the bus. The truck driver lost control while trying to avoid the collision, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus, Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Four adult men died at the scene, while six others sustained injuries.
LASEMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force secured the scene and administered first aid to the injured, who were taken to Epe General Hospital for further treatment.
Oke-Osanyintolu said a private crane had been secured to recover the overturned truck and container and safely extricate the deceased. The operation was ongoing, with traffic management measures in place.
In a separate incident, LASEMA’s Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to a truck crash at about 4:09 a.m. near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.
The truck, with registration number KTU-940XT, struck a solar-powered streetlight pole, mounted the road median and obstructed traffic. Preliminary findings suggested reckless driving was a factor. No casualties were reported.
The agency diverted traffic and recovered the truck using its heavy-duty equipment, Elephant. The vehicle was taken to Abattoir Police Station for investigation and safekeeping.
LASEMA’s Beta Team from Igando Base also responded to a crash at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road. The accident involved a DAF truck, registration number SMK 795 XY, and a Toyota Corolla, registration number AKD 169 EA.
Oke-Osanyintolu said a broken-down truck on the opposite side of the road had caused congestion when the DAF truck, allegedly driving against traffic, collided with the Corolla. The crash obstructed half of the road inward Igando, and the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury.
“The injured driver was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate,” he said.
The Corolla was towed to Igando Police Station. LASEMA deployed its heavy-duty equipment, Super Metro, to recover the DAF truck and restore traffic flow. The operation was ongoing.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid reckless manoeuvres and driving against traffic, and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before travelling.
He also advised residents to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines, 767 and 112.
The permanent secretary offered his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
