The Osun State Police Command on Wednesday warned residents against spreading of fake and provocative news that could cause panic and apprehension ahead of Saturday’s House of Assembly elections.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, the police particularly enjoined politicians to caution their supporters to shun violence and to avoid heating up the polity.
“Commissioner of Police, Mr Kehinde Longe, is using this medium to warn against spreading of fake news and provocative contents on social media with the intent to cause apprehension or panic in the state.
“The police appeal to parents or guardians to also monitor their children and wards against getting involved in any act of criminal activity, or allow themselves to be used as political thugs to disrupt the election process.’’ she stated.
Opalola added that Mr Longe appreciated the electorates for their encouraging conduct during the Feb. 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.
She quoted Longe as saying that the conduct of Osun people showed that they are people of virtue.
Longe urged the people to be more orderly in their conduct during Saturday’s elections, and assured the general public of adequate security before, during and beyond the election.
He reminded residents that restriction on vehicular movement would be enforced to the letter and that there would be no movements from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day, except for those on essential services.
Governorship election will not hold in Osun on March 18 as the last one was conducted on July 16, 2022.
