Nigeria’s House of Representatives has disclosed that it may be forced to reconvene before the elections scheduled for February 25, 2023, if the issues surrounding the latest currency swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are not addressed.
The speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, in a statement issued in Abuja said that the House of Representatives is still monitoring the implementation of the policy and would make a decision if the situation does not improve.
He said that the House has earlier interfaced with the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to seek redress to the situation.
“The House of Representatives intervened on several occasions.
We summoned the CBN governor the first time and again, but he refused to answer because we had many hard questions for him.
“It was until I issued the threat of warrant of arrest before he came, and I would have signed that warrant,” he said.
Gbajabiamila stressed that the House of Assembly has the power to summon any Nigerian if need be among will not hesitate to take action when necessary.
“We can summon anybody and that was exactly what the House was going to do until the CBN governor came.
“So, we are watching, and we are monitoring very closely. If need be, we will reconvene the House, even though we have been away for our elections. I will call the House back if need be,” he said.
