The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has disclosed that Kebbi state governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu mediated for the release of Federal University of Dutse student, Aminu Adamu Mohammed.

ASHENEWS recalls that Mohammed was arrested by the police over his Twitter post, which was described as offending to Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigerian president.

Although he was released on Saturday following Mrs Buhari’s Friday withdrawal of the case, little was known about those who facilitated Mohammed’s release.

However, NANS national president, Umar Barambu in a statement obtained by ASHENEWS on Monday revealed that Bagudu led the mediation team that led to the release of Mohammed.

“We appreciate the mediation team led by His Excellency Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Governor of Kebbi state as well as everyone who played a role that got Comrade Mohammed his freedom.”

Read the statement below:

“We write to inform you of the good news that we have secured the freedom of one of us Aminu Adamu Mohammed, a student of Federal University Dutse.

“Recall that I reached out to you to notify of his arrest and detention following a social media post which the wife of the President found offensive.

“But with your support and those of well-meaning Nigerians home and abroad, individuals and groups, he was released to me on Friday December 2nd, 2022.

“Our comrade Mohammed was not only released, all charges against him were dropped.

“We thank His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for his leadership and guidance in this matter.

“We also appreciate the mediation team led by His Excellency Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Governor of Kebbi state as well as everyone who played a role that got Comrade Mohammed his freedom.

“We want to likewise thank the mother of the nation, Her Excellency, Aisha Buhari for agreeing to drop the charges and for the reconciliation. Nigeria is stronger together.

“In this wise, please note that the protest scheduled to begin on Monday December 5, 2022 is hereby cancelled.

“Once again we thank the ever dynamic Nigerian students and the general public for your every support.

“We want to assure our fellow Nigerian students that under our leadership, we shall continue to uphold and protect your interest,” the statement reads.
