Dr Mustapha Salihu, Adamawa Central Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has donated 200 free cycles of kidney dialysis consumables to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.
Speaking during the donation, Salihu said the gesture was part of his humanitarian support, which went beyond politics, to enable patients to access services at a subsidised rate.
The candidate said he understood that kidney problems were common among the people in the region due to harsh weather and other factors.
“This gesture we do is beyond politics. It is for humanity. People have to survive across parties because the goal is to save the lives of vulnerable people,” he said.
Salihu explained that the gesture was just the beginning, as he would continue to do much better by sustaining the provision of the consumables and other assistance.
According to him, if voted into office, he would attract foreign intervention to enable the people to access affordable healthcare services.
He further urged the Chief Medical Director (CMD) to give timely notification for more consumables, especially when they reached 150 cycles.
Prof. Adamu Bakari, MAUTH’s Chief Medical Director, appreciated the candidate for the gesture and assured him that the consumables would help reduce the amount people pay for dialysis.
Bakari explained that an average cycle cost N100,000 in the facility.
“Your intervention will reduce significantly the amount that people have to pay because it may not just be the consumables that they require; there are also other things,” he said.
The CMD also acknowledged the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in improving the health sector.
He said that in the last one and a half years, MAUTH had received five interventions in the area which had helped to reduce mortality in the state.
