The Enugu State Government has sealed four private hospitals in Enugu North Local Government Area for failing to meet regulatory requirements.
This was stated on Thursday in Enugu by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Chidiogo Ugodu.
Ugodu explained that the hospitals were sealed on July 8 as part of the ministry’s intensified monitoring and supervision of private health facilities across the state to ensure quality healthcare delivery and compliance with standards.
She added that the enforcement was initiated by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu.
According to the statement, Dr. Chinyere Ezeudu, Director of Medical Services, led a team of senior officials on an unscheduled inspection of private health facilities in Enugu North LGA.
The statement quoted Ugwu as saying the exercise aimed to ensure all private hospitals and healthcare providers in the state complied with statutory requirements.
These requirements included renewing operating licenses and registering facilities not yet captured by regulatory authorities.
The commissioner noted that the team inspected seven private health facilities, evaluating their operational status, documentation, licensing compliance, and adherence to healthcare standards.
Ugwu reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under Gov. Peter Mbah, to ensuring residents have access to safe, effective, and quality healthcare services.
He said, “The supervision exercise will be sustained across the state to ensure only duly approved and compliant facilities provide healthcare services to the people.”
The commissioner urged private healthcare operators to regularize their operations by renewing expired licenses and registering unlicensed facilities when necessary.
He emphasized that ongoing monitoring is a regulatory measure and a crucial step toward strengthening the health system and safeguarding citizens’ lives.
It was also reported that weeks earlier, the state government, through the Ministry of Health, sealed three illegal health facilities operating without licenses in Enugu South LGA.
