The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, has alerted residents of Kebbi State to impending flood risks and other weather-related hazards ahead of the 2026 rainy season.
The warning is based on the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, Head of NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Mr Tukur Abubakar, said Kebbi State is among states classified as high flood-risk for 2026.
The agency warned that the state is expected to receive significantly higher rainfall than in 2025, with heavy downpours likely to trigger flash floods in many communities. It added that flooding is projected under high, medium, and low-risk categories across various areas.
NEMA also warned of possible windstorms at the onset of the rains and urged residents to intensify tree planting to mitigate storm damage.
The agency identified July to September as the peak flood period, noting that the Kebbi River may overflow its banks, inundating farmlands, settlements, and infrastructure. It added that elevated water levels could persist into October and November.
About 97 road sections across the state are also at risk of flooding. Motorists were advised to exercise caution as floodwaters could hide potholes and damaged bridges.
In addition, Kebbi may experience a 21-day dry spell between June and August, which could affect agricultural activities. Farmers are advised to plant drought-tolerant and early-maturing crops.
The affected Local Government Areas include Arewa, Dandi, Aleiro, Kalgo, Bunza, Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, Augie, Jega, and Maiyama.
NEMA urged residents to clear drainages, avoid building on floodplains, prepare emergency kits, and comply with evacuation directives when issued.
