Rainstorm damages homes, school in Kaduna

A rainstorm has damaged homes and a school in the Hausawa community of Angwan Gado in the Malali area of Kaduna North Local Government Area.

The storm, which occurred on Sunday evening at about 8 p.m., blew off roofs and caused significant damage to buildings.

Mr Shola Kabir, an affected resident, said the storm destroyed his house and business premises.

“I was preparing for my daily prayers when I heard strong winds blowing off the rooftops of a primary school and my house,” he said.

Another resident, Abdulmumini Yakubu, said the rainstorm destroyed part of his home.

“The heavy downpour pulled down parts of my building, damaged valuable property, and swept away belongings,” he said.

The headmaster of the affected Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school, Salihu Muhammad, said teaching materials, classroom furniture, and parts of the school structure were badly damaged.

“We are appealing to the government and relevant agencies for urgent intervention.

“The damage is extensive. Several classrooms have been exposed, and learning may be interrupted if repairs are not carried out quickly,” Muhammad said.

A community leader, Mr Emmanuel Musa, described the incident as devastating, noting that many residents were displaced.

“The storm came with powerful winds that destroyed school buildings and many houses.

“Some families have been left without shelter, while pupils may struggle to return to school if repairs are delayed,” he said.

He urged the Kaduna State Government, the State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant authorities to provide immediate support for affected victims.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the impact of seasonal storms on vulnerable communities and the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness.
