The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has expressed concern over the acute manpower shortage and obsolete Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) infrastructure in the country’s air traffic control system.
NATCA made this known in a statement jointly issued by its President, Mr. Edino Ilemona, and Secretary, Mr. Umar Fahad, on Sunday in Lagos.
According to the association, Nigeria’s airspace is under severe strain, while its members are enduring undesirable working conditions.
NATCA warned that its members may resort to nationwide flow control if the manpower shortage and outdated CNS infrastructure persist.
“No airspace can be truly safe when the people responsible for managing it are compelled to operate beyond the safe limits of their available systems,” the association said.
NATCA stated that the operational deficiencies are creating avoidable risks and described the current working conditions as unsustainable and hazardous.
The association also called for improved welfare packages for its members, noting that some experienced controllers have remained on Grade Level 16 for up to 13 years.
It added that some controllers’ claims remain unpaid, while several allowances have become outdated.
NATCA further urged the reabsorption of retired controllers into the system on a grade level lower than their retirement ranks to retain institutional knowledge.
“These issues are not only about staff welfare; they are also about the safety of passengers, airlines, airport users, and the entire aviation ecosystem,” it said.
However, NATCA acknowledged the efforts of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), in improving Nigeria’s aviation industry.
