A group, Safe House for Justice and Human Empowerment Centre (SHJHEC), has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to secure farming and other vulnerable communities in Plateau.
Mrs. Edit Gamut, the Executive Director of the organization, made this call during a news conference commemorating the 2026 World Humanitarian Day on Wednesday in Jos.
Gamut, a legal practitioner, stated that the event was organized in collaboration with the Ascend Community Wellness Centre and Relief and Hope Foundation (RAHF).
Decrying the humanitarian crisis in Plateau caused by prolonged insecurity, she urged all levels of government to take action.
She expressed concern that the government’s failure to secure farming communities could lead to food insecurity in Plateau and across Nigeria.
The executive director further called on the government to enhance early warning and rapid response mechanisms to address the crisis.
“Recent findings show many households cannot access farmlands or income opportunities, increasing vulnerability among displaced persons and host communities.
“For farming communities, insecurity has cut off families from their land and income sources, deepening food insecurity, poverty, and vulnerability, and adding pressure on host communities.
“We are calling on both federal and state governments to protect civilians—not just territories—strengthen early warning systems, secure farmlands, and support safe access,” she said.
Mr. Nanmak Bali, Executive Director of RAHF, also expressed concern about the looming humanitarian crisis in Plateau due to increased displacement.
He highlighted the lack of healthcare, quality education, clean water, sanitation, and other basic services in vulnerable communities.
“We call on the government to scale up support for food security, protection, shelter, mental health, livelihoods, and psychosocial support, especially for women, children, and persons with disabilities in displaced communities,” he added.
The 2026 World Humanitarian Day theme was “Act for Humanity.”
