Governor Ahmed Aliyu has called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to urgently address the poor aviation lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto, ahead of the 2026 Hajj airlift.
The governor made the call during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, at his office in Abuja.
Governor Aliyu described the airport’s inadequate lighting system as a serious challenge hindering smooth operations, particularly at night.
According to him, the state is losing significant opportunities due to the inability of airlines to land at night because of the poor lighting system. He therefore appealed to the ministry for urgent intervention.
“We are concerned about the lack of a functional lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, especially as Hajj operations approach,” he said.
“Most of our flights to the Holy Land usually depart at night, and unless this issue is resolved, such operations may face serious difficulties,” he added.
Governor Aliyu also commended the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, for his numerous initiatives aimed at positioning Nigeria’s aviation sector among the best globally.
In his response, the minister assured the governor that the ministry would address the lighting challenges urgently to ensure the airport operates effectively both day and night.
He also praised Governor Aliyu for executing several projects at the airport, which have significantly enhanced its operations.
These projects include the construction of the airport road, provision of a modern Hajj terminal, beautification of the airport road, and the ongoing construction of a VIP lounge.
The minister thanked the governor for his commitment to the development of the airport and reiterated the ministry’s resolve to ensure that federal airports remain efficient and effective in the national interest.
Governor Aliyu was accompanied on the visit by the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, and the Chief of Staff, Government House Sokoto, Aminu Haliru Dikko, mni.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mahmoud Adam Kambari, and the Managing Director of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, Engr. Faruk Ahmed.
