A Greece-based volunteer group, Heart Doctors, has sponsored the education of 50 children from leprosy-affected families in Bauchi State and unveiled plans to build 50 housing units for persons living with leprosy.
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sani Mohammed, disclosed this on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the medical team to Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi.
He commended the volunteers for supporting 50 children from the leprosy community to attend secondary school and for proposing 50 housing units to improve the welfare of affected families.
Housing units to restore dignity
According to the commissioner, each housing unit will include three bedrooms, a kitchen, and toilet facilities, aimed at restoring dignity and improving living conditions for affected families.
Mohammed said the outreach covered Bayara General Hospital, Yelwa village, and Barnawa village, where about 600 patients were treated at each location.
He added that in Nasarawa State, more than 600 patients also received consultations and medications, while some complex cases were referred for surgical procedures.
“At Bayara, 30 patients were identified for major surgeries, while three critical cases were sponsored at a specialist hospital at a cost of about 4,000 euros,” he said.
Group relies on personal funds, donations
Team Lead, Ms Clen John, said the group operates without government funding, relying on personal resources and donated medicines from supporters in Greece.
She explained that the humanitarian mission began in 2003 during the Baghdad war, highlighting the group’s longstanding commitment to service and integrity.
Governor praises “doctors from the heart”
In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed lauded the volunteers’ courage and compassion, describing them as “doctors from the heart.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups through free primary and secondary education and scholarships for indigent students.
He also pledged stronger collaboration with the Greek medical team to expand healthcare access and deepen service delivery across Bauchi State.
