The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has announced February 20, 2027, as the date for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls will hold on March 6, 2027.
Amupitan disclosed this while formally releasing the Notice of Election, along with the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, during a press briefing in Abuja.
He described the announcement as “a significant milestone in our democratic journey,” noting that it fulfills a constitutional obligation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to the Commission, the presidential and National Assembly elections will be conducted on February 20, 2027, while elections for governors and members of State Houses of Assembly are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
INEC stated that the elections will cover the offices of President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; governors and deputy governors — except in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states — as well as members of the Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly.
The INEC Chairman emphasized that the publication of the Notice of Election strictly complies with the provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution, 1999 (as amended), and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires the notice to be issued not later than 360 days before the date fixed for the elections.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting credible, transparent and inclusive elections, urging stakeholders to engage constructively with the electoral process.
