The Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) has reiterated its commitment to developing its Specialist Teaching Hospital into one of the leading medical training and healthcare institutions in Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, gave the assurance on Tuesday when he led members of the university’s management on an official visit to the Northwest University Specialist Teaching Hospital.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Bunza said the tour was undertaken on behalf of the Founder and Pro-Chancellor of the University, Distinguished Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, to assess the hospital’s infrastructure and facilities ahead of the full implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Northwest University Sokoto, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH).

“Our vision is very clear. This teaching hospital is designed to be a centre of excellence for medical education, research, and quality healthcare delivery, not only for Sokoto State but for the entire country,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He noted that the assessment visit was crucial to ensuring that all necessary standards were in place to support teaching, training, and service delivery under the tripartite MoU arrangement.

Prof. Bunza further assured that the Founder and Pro-Chancellor remains fully committed to the project and is prepared to act promptly on professional guidance.

“Distinguished Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has consistently demonstrated his commitment to quality education and healthcare. He has directed that any recommendation aimed at strengthening this hospital and the university’s medical programme should be treated with utmost priority,” he stated.

Commending the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Taufeeq Ibrahim, the Vice-Chancellor praised his leadership and dedication to positioning the facility as a reference point for excellence.

“We are impressed by what we have seen so far. The level of organisation, the facilities on ground, and the commitment of the management under Prof. Ibrahim clearly show a determination to build a hospital that can compete favourably with the best in the country,” Prof. Bunza said.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Taufeeq Ibrahim, assured the NWUS management of the hospital’s readiness to fulfil its statutory mandate as a teaching and referral centre.

“I want to assure the university management that we are fully prepared to work collaboratively to deliver on the expectations of this hospital. My team and I are committed to ensuring that the hospital meets the highest standards in clinical service, training, and research,” Prof. Ibrahim said.

He added that the hospital would continue to align its operations with the objectives of the university and relevant regulatory bodies to guarantee quality outcomes.

Following the meeting, Prof. Ibrahim conducted the Vice-Chancellor and members of the NWUS management on a guided tour of key departments and facilities within the hospital to further familiarise them with ongoing developments and areas of strategic importance.
