Professor May Agbamuche has been appointed Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The change of leadership took place Tuesday in Abuja, when the outgoing chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, officially handed over to Agbamuche during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC’s headquarters.

In his remarks, Yakubu urged all commissioners and directors within the commission to offer their full support to Agbamuche until a permanent chairman is selected.
Yakubu, who first became INEC chairman on October 21, 2015—after serving in an acting capacity following Amina Zakari’s tenure—will leave office in November 2025 after completing two full terms. Agbamuche, meanwhile, is acknowledged as INEC’s longest-serving National Commissioner.
